Selected as Nebraska’s Outstanding Event 1999!

KOLACH DAYS, a festive celebration of Verdigre's Czech heritage, was actually conceived in 1939 and sponsored by the Czech Federation. It became an annual event in the 1950's. Past festivities have included a carnival, bands, dancing, Kolach Baking Contest, Kolach Eating Contest, Turtle Races, Kiddie Parade, Grand Parade, flea markets, stage productions, basketball tournament, mud volleyball, various shows and demonstrations, tractor pull, Bull-o-Rama, Alumni Banquet, & crowning of the new Kolach Queen. It continues as an annual event held on the second full weekend in June.

HAT IS A KOLACH?
Kolaches, a favorite Czech and Slovak dessert originating from Eastern Europe, are baked pastries of yeast dough with delicious fruit filling. Some fillings include prune, poppy seed, apricot, cherry, & cottage cheese. Kolaches are available for sale from many groups and individuals and at many Verdigre businesses year-round.

Food & Drink

Cozy Corner Café
Full menu available all weekend. Fri. night: chicken special; Sat. evening: steaks with salad bar; Sunday: breakfast and noon specials. Specializing in home-cooked meals, freshly baked pies, rolls and soft serve ice cream.


Catholic Church
Kolaches by the dozen Fri. from 8:00-10:00 p.m. at the hall. Coffee and kolaches (single or by the dozen) at the handicap access (east side of church) Sat. from 9:00-4:00 and Sun. at 10:00 a.m. until gone at the ZCBJ Hall. Get tickets for Quilt Drawing. Czech Soul Food (Goulash, Koprova, Sausage-Kraut, Rohlicky, Vdolky) Saturday only - 10:30 until gone.


Misty's Saloon
Thursday evening: Horseshoe Throwing Competition (must register). Beer Garden Thursday - Sunday. Two bands on Sunday. Serving food throughout the weekend.


Verdigre Bakery
Open all weekend. Kolaches & other Czech favorites, doughnuts, sweet rolls, ice cream. 402-668-2233.


United Methodist Church
(serving begins Sunday at 10:30 a.m. until gone): Roast pork, fried chicken, sauerkraut, dumplings, green beans, salad bar, desserts. Kolaches sold by the dozen.


Jack's QwickShop
(Hwy 14): Old-fashioned wieners, bologna, jaternice & beef jerky - all made right here. Gas-Diesel-Off Sale Beer Only-Soft Ice Cream-Sale Pop. Kolaches for sale.


American Legion Building
Saturday: Kolaches by the dozen; beverage, & individual kolaches. Sunday: Serving plate lunches and kolaches by the dozen.


Weekend Events

Class Reunions
will be held throughout the weekend. Make it a point to look up your former classmates and friends, and meet more while you're back home. We always look forward to having you here!


Verdigre Heritage Museum Complex
will be open to the public Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Closed during the parade). Visit our complex; tour our two buildings and grist mill. Enjoy our heritage.


Souvenir & Information Booth
Take home a souvenir polo or t-shirt, apron, a Czech cookbook, etc. The booth will be located inside Hair Designs on Main Street and will be open Saturday and Sunday.


Verdigre Public Library
Extended hours during Kolach Days: Thursday and Friday - 11:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Saturday - 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Come check out the library's new equipment and genealogy services!
